Commitment
When you are choosing a sport to play please make sure that you are 100%
vested in that sport. Whether you are the team captain or a benchwarmer, it
doesn’t matter. You have to give it your all at all times. As a coach I would rather
have players that aren’t great, but give 100% and have a lot of heart, than a play-
er that is great but doesn’t have the heart or give his all.
I can remember when I was a Freshman and golf was added as a competi-
tive sport at my high school. I had to make a choice between playing football or
playing golf. It was a lot of pressure because I was pretty good at football, but I
knew that I was better at golf and that’s where my heart was. I ended up choos-
ing the less popular sport of golf. I got made fun of for it, but I didn’t care. By the
time I was a senior, we had won our regional championship, and for the first time
in school history went to the state finals. This was probably one of the biggest ac-
complishments that I can remember being in school. I went with my gut and de-
cided to play a sport that I loved and I was able to give it my all. We played and
practiced every day during the summer, knowing that we were going to have a
good team. I didn’t let any of my friends or other coaches try to influence me one
way or the other. It was my decision. I was fortunate enough to have parents that
backed me 100% and were ok with the choice that I made. Actually, they were
quite proud of me.
Moral of the story here, you need to decide for yourself if you want to play a
certain sport. Don’t let anyone else make the decision for you. If you are truly torn
between two sports, there is nothing wrong with being a multi-sport athlete and
playing both. If the sports are going on at the same time, hopefully your coaches
will back you (and they should) and allow you to play both sports. With that being
said, you have to commit. Once you decide what you want to do, commit 100%
and give it your all!! Jon Ligrow
