Bike To School Day

Approximately 130 Cass City Elementary School students along with 20 parents and staff members celebrated
Bike to School Day Wednesday morning. Bike to School Day encourages a nationwide bike-focused celebration for
students during the month of May to raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for bicycling and walking.
The event also emphasizes the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedes-
trian safety, reducing traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The event builds connections between
families, schools and the broader community. This is the second year Cass City Elementary has participated in
this event.

Though the forecast had looked promising, a cold rain began to come down just as the bike brigade began. The
damp weather did not stop bikers from enjoying an invigorating ride to school escorted by fire trucks from the
Cass City Fire Department. The route began behind Cass City High School, wound through Northwood Estates
Subdivision, came across Seeger Street by the wooden park, and ended at the bike racks behind the old Campbell
Elementary Building. Riders then walked the rest of the way to the elementary building. Each child and adult
who participated in this event received a smoothie at the end of the event. Each biker also received a new water
bottle donated by Independent Bank of Cass City.

This event was established by the Michigan Safe Routes to School Program in partnership with the Michigan Fit-
ness Foundation and the Michigan Department of Transportation. Mr. Adam Dorland, Physical Education teacher
at Cass City Schools, registered the school for the event and along with the Cass City Elementary Coordinated
Health Team, organized the plans for Bike to School Day to be a positive and memorable experience for all who
participated.
