Being the best at everything
By Joe Stewart
At Mission 1 Fitness and Performance we have worked with a variety of athletes that are very good at
their chosen sports. One thing that we have noticed over the years is that they also share other common
character traits and that they are very successful in other things as well.
A lot of them have been very good students, ranking towards the top of their class. They often times have
AP classes and will do homework between sets in the gym. (The first time I saw this it was kind of comi-
cal.) Our athletes are involved in Student Council, Tech Center, Volunteer Clubs, Church Groups, they have
jobs, they have families, they have a lot of responsibility. Woven within all of their character we see com-
mon threads of hard work, integrity, personal accountability and responsibility, and fun.
These kids, like many of the successful people we know, want to do all of the things and they want to do
all of the things WELL.
So how do you be the best at everything?
Be on a Team
A support network is vital to the success of anyone. You need your family and friends to share your vi-
sion of success. If your friends are unmotivated for success then they will bring you down. You need people
at your back to push you when you need it and reel you back in when you need it as well. Surround yourself
with people that challenge you and push you to be better.
Be a Giver
Turns out it is not all about you afterall. You can’t expect all of those awesome family members and
friends to have your back through thick and thin if you don’t have theirs. Be there for people when they need
it. Help people when they need. This will pay off big one day.
Know How to Say No
There are a lot of choices to make throughout the week. There are a lot of opportunities to hang with
friends, relax, do homework, join clubs, help your Aunt Tammy move a dresser….the list could go on. Know
how to prioritize your goals. Learn to say No to things before you overextend yourself. If you’re spread too
thin then you will be mediocre at everything. And that’s probably not your style.
Know How to Say Yes
Remember, be a giver. The hardest part is knowing WHEN to say Yes and WHEN to say No. You’ll figure it
out.
Remember to Have Fun
If getting all A’s and going for All-State turns into a never ending job then you’re going to get burned out
and stop caring or doing anything. Have fun with the challenges that being an above average human brings.
Not everyone is up for the challenge to go above and beyond. But you are. Even if you have days that you
don’t want to be, IT’S OK! People like you are built for something different than average.
Managing life is hard. If you keep it simple, keep your goals in mind, and learn how to prioritize you will
win the long game.
