Summer Golf Clinic & Buckley Open
Thursday, August 2nd was the Buckley Open held at Rolling Hills Golf Course in Cass City. I had
the pleasure of doing a 3 day clinic right before the Open. We had an amazing turnout of 23 kids
starting at the age of 5 participate. Having this many kids participate leads me to believe that the
future of golf is going to be ok.
During the clinic on the first day we went over grip, stance, and the golf swing. We stayed on the
driving range for this day and I was able to give some individual instruction as needed. On the sec-
ond day we hung out at the putting green. Here we discussed the importance of keeping the greens
nice. We went over the putting stroke and how to read the greens so we know where to aim. Then
we headed over to number 9’s green. This is where we learned how to chip. Then we proceeded to
have a chipping and putting contest. The first half of day 3 was review of what we learned and hit-
ting on the range. The second half we went out and actually played number 9. This was a really fun
clinic to teach and I think the kids were able to learn a little bit, but most importantly they got to have
fun and were introduced to the sport that I love.
After the clinic there were several from the surrounding area that participated in the Buck-
ley Open. There were 49 participants at Rolling Hills. Bob Buckley puts on several tournaments
throughout the summer at courses all over the thumb. When I was younger I can remember playing
and it was only held at Verona Hills. Now they have the Jr Tournament at 6 different golf courses.
This is a great way to get kids involved in the game and a great way to teach them about competi-
tion.
