Stay in the Game with Chiropractic
                                                                      by Dr Sally Blossom
What do Tom Brady, Michael Phelps, Cristiano Ronaldo and the US Women’s Soccer Team have in com-
mon? They all have chiropractic care as a part of their health and training routines. Did you also know
that over 90 percent of all professional athletes use chiropractic care to help them reduce injuries and
function at their top level. In fact, all NFL teams and 72 percent of professional golfers have chiro-
practors as part of their health team.

You may be asking why an athlete would seek out chiropractic care rather than care from their fam-
ily doctor. Most injuries an athlete suffers from are to the musculoskeletal system and nervous sys-
tem. These are two of the major body system athletes rely on. Your musculoskeletal system consists
of all your joints and muscles. Your nervous system controls all your cells, muscles and joints. A
chiropractor is trained in how the two work together and how to help when one or both of the systems
are injured.

Over 30 million kids play organized sports each year resulting in overuse injuries and traumatic in-
juries. When a young athlete is injured, his or her spine can be put out of alignment, further adding to
the stress on joints and nervous system. By performing a thorough examination, taking x-rays when
necessary and evaluating the joints and areas affected, a chiropractor can help alleviate pain and help
accelerate the healing process for the student athlete without drugs or surgery. Of course, it should
be noted that injuries such as fractures, lacerations and other severe injuries should not be treated by a
chiropractor and should be referred out to the proper medical personnel.

Many Injuries from tennis elbow to groin pain to ankle pain to back pain can be evaluated and helped
with chiropractic care. A few benefits of treatment include alleviation of pain, better posture, and in-
creased mobility. Regular care can also help prevent injuries and promote better performance. That’s
why that 90 percent of world class athletes uses a chiropractor; not because of injury but to help
prevent them and to perform at their best.

With so many benefits to chiropractic care pre, present and post injury, chiropractic is definitely a
great choice to keep your student athletes at the top of their game.
