Competitive Skiing Champion: Ethan Ulewicz
                                                                                                 By Matt Fields
For many local student-athletes, winter sports means time on the hard-
wood, wrestling mat, or even in a swimming pool. For local competitive
skiing star, Ethan Ulewicz of Kingston, competition takes place on the
slopes. How does someone get into competitive skiing? For Ethan, this ski-
ing journey began at the age of four years old. After several years of fam-
ily vacations to Nub’s Nob ski resort, Ethan took a trip out to Vermont for
what he thought was just another ski lesson. Ethan would later find out he
was being evaluated for his potential in racing. After a promising evalua-
tion and encouragement from his parents, Ethan committed to training for
competitive racing on the slopes. This commitment has taken Ethan from
Vermont, to New Hampshire, to Colorado, to countless different moun-
tain courses. This commitment has also required a serious sacrifice of his
time, “Since I was 10 years old I have had training every Saturday and Sun-
day from 9am- 2pm every weekend from Thanksgiving to the end of March.
Along with a lot of Friday night races in which I had to leave school early.
Because of this I have given up playing school basketball and I don’t see
my family and friends as much would like to on the weekends”. This com-
mitment has paid off for Ethan, in the form of wins on the slopes. Just this
year, Ethan was able compete in the highly touted Volkl-Dalbello speed se-
ries in the 13-17 age division, despite being only 14 years old. This seven
race long series pits the top high school racers in the state against each
other. Ethan came away with a first place finish. Ethan was quick to pass
the credit when discussing his success, “I never would have found the pas-
sion for skiing if I didn’t have the continuous support and sacrifices of my
parents”. What does the future hold for Ethan? “I would love to be able to
ski for my entire life and I will try to stick with racing for as long as pos-
sible”. Ethan also hopes that skiing opens up new opportunities for him to
compete at the collegiate level. Keep up the great work Ethan!
